What is hydrogen ?

What is hydrogen ?

Hydrogen is a highly flammable gas commonly known as an element in the table of elements. Hydrogen is one of the richest elements on earth. This element was extracted from other compounds but not being manufactured.  We often ask ourselves the question “what is hydrogen?’  Forgetting the fact that we would understand the element better not just by asking but by searching what is behind the letter.

In almost all of the things that we do every day, we consume hydrogen. This flammable gas is present in nature and so abundant that it must be used properly. Hydrogen with the H symbol it is the first element listed in the periodic table of elements. This chemical element is composed of a single proton and a single electron by which it has no color and odor. Because this does not exist in its gas form on Earth, it must be separated from other elements that it is contained in.  The two common ways to do this are called electrolysis and steam reforming (water splitting).

Hydrogen has an atomic number of 1, that atomic number describes the number of protons present in hydrogen.  It is a colorless gas with plenty of uses most especially in the industrial area of businesses and one of which are for petroleum products. Hydrogen has a remarkably wide range of explanations from different leading experts.  This element was studied and carefully deliberated since it was the simplest element on earth.

The energy that the hydrogen has can be particularly useful to humans. Water is one area that hydrogen that is exceedingly abundant on earth. People cannot live a life without this particular element. Not only that, hydrogen also widely used in factories and industries by which it is being used for the refinement of fuel. Now this process is called as hydrogenation. The usefulness of hydrogen can also lessen dangerous effects to humans if being managed properly.

what is hydrogen

You might ask “what is Hydrogen?”  There are many answers to that question.  Hydrogen has a lot of uses for humans. The sun is comprised of hydrogen and helium.  When the hydrogen atoms are combined they produce helium atoms. This method is called fusion.  One of the most rewarding things that it does is that it gives off a radiant energy that gives us light.  It emits energy and helps the plant life on Earth to grow.  Because of it the wind blows and the rain falls.

Hydrogen is much lighter than air and soon rises being removed from the atmosphere.  The element of this gas is not found by itself on earth and is only in compound forms with other elements, such as water, methane, and petroleum.  This can also be found in all things that grow.  It has the highest amount of energy of any fuel by weight but also the lowest amount in volume.

Hydrogen is also being used in developing high grade weapons such as nuclear bombs and some of which that has as an ingredient of the said element. Scientists of today are making new discoveries and are creating new methods making hydrogen useful for human beings.  One of which, is now being used to power up vehicles and automobiles. This will make lives more comfortable and hazard free.

what is hydrogen

The element Hydrogen can bring us back to our school days.   In our senior and junior year in school where we discuss the different types of elements and their uses. Hydrogen is the most discussed of them all.  When we heard the word hydrogen many would think of water first. The “what is hydrogen” question now has a wider and broad area of discussion.  This so called hydrogen technology, hydrogen energy, hydrogen embrittlement and such things that are related to hydrogen development.

This highly flammable element nearly makes up seventy five percent of it in the universe in volume. When it is in a compound, then it comes in a larger amount.  There  are approximately 9 million metric tons being produced in the United States each year.  This is enough to power millions of cars and homes. The H symbol element is extremely popular and can so easily be detected that even kindergarten students, and some preschools know what kind of element it is.  At least they have a sense of the basics of it.

Hydrogen is simply an element that is required for most life.  Scientists are finding new ways to make it useable by using the electrolysis and steam reforming methods.  Steam Reforming is the most used method but has been linked with greenhouse gas emissions, and they are linked to global warming. The electrolysis process is expensive but creates no emissions, and new technologies are being developed to try to change this.
